ATOMIC-ATM Gateway
(Forwarding Single-Source IP Traffic)

Currently we are implementing an ATOMIC-ATM gateway using a Sun SPARC host
with a single FORE System ATM SBA-200 interface and a single Myrinet host interface.
Performance of forwarding single-host source IP traffic:
- Experiment environment:
- Gateway: Sun SPARC 20/71
- Source: Sun SPARC 20/71
- Destination: Sun SPARC 20/71
- Software: Myricom Myrinet-2.0c and FORE System SBA200-3.0.1.
- Performance measurement tool used: blast.tar.gz
- Configuration comparison:
- In ATOMIC configuration, the flow traverses only Myrinet link(s)
- In ATM configuration, the flow traverses only ATM link(s)
- In Gateway configuration, the flow goes through Myrinet/ATM gateway
- Tabulated performance values
Observation:
- Why does the gateway show asymmetric performance?
- On the gateway,
Myrinet device driver introduces higher overhead in sending packets
than in receiving packets.
- With 640-Mbps Myrinet link bandwidth, the packet sending rate of a
Myrinet host is higher than that of a FORE System OC3-c ATM host.
- 150-Mbps ATOMIC UDP throughput cannot be kept up over a single
OC3-c ATM (theoretical peak payload bandwidth = 140 Mbps) connection.
