Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) has announced its
participation in the Cyber Defense Technology Experimental
Research (DETER) testbed operated by the Information
Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California
and funded by the Department of Homeland Security and the
National Science Foundation. The DETER facility developed by the University of Southern
California and the University of California Berkeley provides
a collaborative and vendor-neutral experimental
environment for cybersecurity research efforts and is a
venue for government, industry and private sector groups.
The Juniper Networks products, including core routers
and Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) systems, are
currently being used in experiments on distributed denial of
service attacks because of their ability to support complex
network security and performance requirements. The
results
of these experiments will be presented at a DETER workshop
on September 28, 2005. In the future the Juniper products
will be used in a variety of experiments including those
studying network routing and worm behavior.
"Juniper Networks networking and security products help
create a real-world testing environment because these
products are in some of the largest and most complex
networks in the world," said Terry Benzel, DETER program
director at ISI. "This authentic network enables us to gather
more detailed information on how malicious code affects
network infrastructures. We appreciate Juniper Networks'
commitment and support of our research."
"Cybersecurity is of national importance, and research is a
fundamental aspect that must be funded to ease current
security concerns," said Dr. Douglas Maughan, program
manager, Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects
Agency (HSARPA), within the Science and Technology (S&T)
Directorate of DHS. "Through investment in projects like
DETER, which leverage the best academic and private sector
capabilities in the world, the government can better
understand the requirements for continued security of this
country's networks."
The technologies in the DETER network include Juniper
Networks M7i routers, commonly deployed by service
providers and in large enterprise environments, and IDP
200s, which are use in the testbed itself with future plans to
deploy additional products to secure DETER's network
perimeter.
"Juniper Networks recognizes the need for collaborative
initiatives between government and the private sector to
ensure national priorities are met," said Thomas Kreidler,
vice president of Juniper Federal Systems, Juniper Networks.
"Providing technology support to the DETER testbed
underscores our commitment to federal initiatives that will
improve the security of our information networks."
About the Information Sciences Institute
Founded in 1972, and one of the birthplaces of the Internet,
ISI is one of the world's leading research centers in the
fields of computer science and information technology,
carrying on more than $60 million of funded research
annually. Part of the University of Southern California Viterbi
School of Engineering, and ranked seventh nationally by the
US News & World Reports, its research strengths include
artificial intelligence, computational science and computer
architecture, computer security, electronic commerce,
human-centered support systems, embedded systems,
integrated circuit design and fabrication, internet
communications and advanced networking, natural language
technology, parallel and grid computing, robotics, and
systems integration. ISI currently has more than 300
researchers, graduate students, and staff working at two
locations, in Marina del Rey, California, and Arlington,
Virginia. Additional information can be found at www.isi.edu.
About DETER
The DETER project provides an experimental network
testbed that supports the development of next-generation
information security technologies for cyber defense. The
testbed provides the necessary infrastructure - networks,
facilities, tools, and supporting processes - to support
national-scale experimentation on emerging security
research and advanced development technologies.
