"Tactical Arabic: Using Speech, AI, and Game Technologies to Learn Communicative Skills"
09/10/04: 10:30 AM
11th Floor Large Conference Room
Host: Patrick Pantel, schedule
Abstract: The talk will describe and demonstrate the Tactical Arabic project for teaching Arabic language and culture. Tactical Arabic helps people to learn to communicate in a foreign language, by conversing with non-player characters. It also includes an intelligent tutoring capability that provides learners with individualized motivational feedback on their performance. The talk will describe some of the technologies incorporated into the game: learner modeling, pedagogical interaction tactics, interaction using speech and gesture. The combination of game context, rich interactivity, and motivational feedback helps learners with a wide range of abilities to acquire communicative skills. Results will be presented from extensive evaluations with learners.
