Abstract: Recently DARPA/IPTO held a workshop on cognitive grand challenges to complement DARPA's robotic grand challenge. I will report the main themes of the workshop and say why we need challenges and what makes some better than others. The second part of my talk will be about the cognitive architecture we are developing for DARPA's Architectures for Cognitive Information Processing program (with co-PIs John Granacki and, from Raytheon Julius Bogdanowicz and Mike Vahey). Taken together, the two parts of my talk are intended to sketch a vision for cognitive systems research.
