"Composition of Semantic Web Services"
04/25/06: 10:30 AM, webcast
11th Floor Large Conference Room
Host: Jafar Adibi, schedule
Abstract: As Web Services become prevalent to achieve interoperability between heterogeneous, decentralized and distributed systems, the problem of selecting and composing services to accomplish a given task becomes more important. Using Web ontologies to describe Web Services facilitates the integration of services provided by separate developers. In this talk, I will present my research on combining AI planning techniques with Description Logic (DL) reasoning to automatically compose Web Services. More specifically, I will describe HTN-DL, a formalism that brings together Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning and DL reasoning to enable flexible task matching and to represent state information in a rich and expressive language. I will discuss the challenges both on the planning side, e.g. generating compositions with incomplete information about the world, and on the reasoning side, e.g. reasoning with large number of instances in changing knowledge bases. I will also present the composition system based on HTN-DL
and describe the reasoner component Pellet - the OWL-DL reasoner I developed.
