"Data Management Challenges for the Life Science Enterprise"

Abstract: I will motivate some challenges in life science data management. I will then describe several problems in discovering relevant knowledge from these data sources. The first problem will address a ranking problem a la Google to produce query dependent ranking of a result on a layered graph representing the life science graph (Web). The second problem will explore variations of selecting paths in the life science graph that will also solve some Top K optimization problems. The third project will address the challenge of enhancing links between entries in data sources to produce enhanced lslinks. These lslinks can be used in discovering hidden patterns and knowledge.

About Louiqa Raschid: Louiqa Raschid is a Professor at the University of Maryland in College Park. Her research interests are focused around issues of information (data and knowledge) management, semantics and data integration, and performance. She investigate applications in the life sciences, health information systems, humanitarian IT applications and Grid computing. Her research utilizes a variety of methodologies and reference sub-areas such as optimization, large scale simulation using trace data, semantics and logic based reasoning, and data analysis techniques. Her research has been published in journals and conferences including ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, AAAI, IEEE ICDE, ACM TODS, IEEE TKDE, IEEE ToC, the Journal of Logic Programming, and the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. Her research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. She has been a Visiting Scientist/Professor at the French National Laboratories for Information Sciences (INRIA), Hewle tt Packard Research Labs, Stanford Research Institute, and Humboldt University in Berlin.
