Dr. Arens is Director of ISI's Intelligent Systems Division, one of the largest artificial intelligence research labs in the U.S. The division's work includes:

In addition, the DGRC hosts the annual National Conference on Digital Government Research and maintains the online community and toolset for the NSF's Digital Government grant program at www.DigitalGovernment.org.
CRUE
He is co-founder of and remains active in ISI's new Center for Research on Unexpected Events (CRUE), which was established to
investigate the policies, infrastructure and support needed to improve
responses to low-probability, high-impact events -- natural or man-made --
within dynamic human environments.
CRUE is intended to catalyze a broad range of cross-divisional work at both
ISI locations, along with partners in other parts of USC, other
universities, industry, government agencies, and non-governmental
organizations.
CRUE is an outgrowth of a workshop ISI
organized for the National Science Foundation on "Responding to the
Unexpected," which was held in lower Manhattan this past February. The
final report from this workshop can be downloaded at the CRUE website.
