Basic Open ATM Technology (BOAT) Project
The objective of BOAT is to complete insofar as possible a publically
available, highly modular ATM protocol suite implementation, for use
by experimenters and standards developers. BOAT is an updated version
of the ARPA-funded Vendor Independent Networking Control Environment
(VINCE), begun by us under the auspices of Naval Research Laboratory.
BOAT also supports ARPA participation in exercises using the
Washington Area Bitway and ATDnet.
-
We implement the BOAT ATM protocols using canonical interfaces (proven
by time) to call setup and switch management. The details of specific
hardware are concealed in a 'fabric' layer, promoting portability of
the software.
-
Besides platform portability (which depends on the availability of
detailed hardware interfaces or a programming interface), our approach
enables rapid addition to BOAT of new and modified standards code.
E.g. our BOAT suite has been the first available implementation of
each new release of the ATM Forum UNI signaling spec.
