Wireless Mesh Access Networks: some thoughts from the South Pacific

IndraNet Technologies is a New Zealand company that has been developing a wireless mesh internet access technology since 1998. We believe we have a viable solution to making a wireless mesh network that will scale at least far enough to be used as a general purpose access network for IP and and IP-based applications such as VoIP, power grid metering, management, and distributed generation, environmental monitoring and so forth. IPv6 is an essential part of the solution, even if it is not seen by the end user. I will talk about the IndraNet access solution from an architectural point of view, and also about our practical experiences since then.

Andrew McGregor first started working with IP networks in 1990 while studying Physics at the University of Canterbury. During 1997 while a graduate student in laser thermodynamics, he met Dr Louis Arnoux, and they commenced work on what became IndraNet Technologies Ltd. Since 1998 IndraNet has been working on commercialization of wireless mesh IP access networks, the first of which was commissioned in Ashburton, New Zealand, in 2001 for the local electricity grid management company. IndraNet is now preparing for the commercial launch of a broadband Internet access service in New Zealand and several other South Pacific nations.
