 FAQ

 For Everyone:

  • Q: What is the Information Sciences Institute and how do I find out more about it?

A: The ISI website covers both history and current initiatives, and has numerous links to researchers and projects. I suggest starting there.
  • Q: How is ISI related to the University of Southern California?

A: ISI is a research lab that is part of the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC. Many of the Ph.D. level researchers at ISI have joint appointments in academic departments on campus. There are also many students that work at ISI while they are working on a degree.
  • Q: Where is ISI and how to do I get there?

A: ISI is located in Marina del Rey, which is about 30 minutes from the main campus by car. There are direction to ISI here. There is also a shuttle that runs from the main campus multiple times a day. You can find the shuttle schedule at USC Transportation under Marina Del Rey Shuttle.
  • Q: Would you tell me more about what the Information Integration group actually does?

A: There are fairly complete explanations on our Information Integration Group. Please take a look there.

 For Prospective Students:

  • Q: I'm an undergraduate and would like to do a summer internship with you. How do I apply?

A: I don't hire any undergraduate summer interns directly, but the USC School of Engineering has several different summer internship programs. Please go to the following web site for more information and instructions on how to apply: Viterbi Summer Internships.
  • Q: I have been accepted to the USC Computer Science department's M.S. program. Will you consider me for a position as a research assistant?

A: I don't generally take on M.S. students until I get to know them. A good way for me to get to know you is to take my course, CSCI 548, "Information Integration on the Web". I teach the course every spring semester.
  • Q: I am a Ph.D. candidate at another university. Would you consider me for a summer internship, and if so, would the position be paid?

A: I do accept non-USC Ph.D. students for summer internships, and may be able to provide financial support. Send me your CV, a description of your current research, what you would like to work on, and why you think this is the place to do it.
  • Q: I'm considering coming to USC for my Ph.D. in computer science. Would you please review my CV and let me know whether I'd be able to work with you?

A: I'm always looking for strong students with research experience, but can only consider an application once the admissions committee has reviewed and approved it. I would encourage you to apply if you've done research and meet USC's academic requirements. Make sure to list me on the USC application form as one of the professors with whom you would like to work.

 For USC Students:

  • Q: I am a USC undergraduate. Do you have any openings in your research group?

A: There are programs to fund undergraduate research, and we often have undergraduate funding available. If you are interested, please send me an email and tell me about your background and what you are interested in working on.
  • Q: I am a USC M.S. student in computer science. Do you supervise directed research projects?

A: I don't generally take on directed research projects unless a student has already taken my class. That way, I know he/she has the necessary background to work in my research areas.
  • Q: I am a USC M.S. student in computer science. Do you have any openings for research assistants?

A: : I do hire M.S. students from time to time, but only consider those who have taken my class or are strongly recommended by someone I know.
  • Q: I'm a USC Ph.D. student and am very interested in your research. May I join your group?

A: Send me your CV, a description of your past research experience, the topics you're interested in working on, and why you believe this is the place to do it.

For Prospective Staff, Postdocs and Researchers:

  • Q: I'll be graduating soon and am interested in a post-doc position in your group. Do you have any openings?

A: I offer one and two-year post-doc positions, and may be interested if you have research experience in areas related to my current interests. (See the current projects under the Projects page). Whether I'll be hiring when you graduate depends on funding availability and that often happens on short notice. If you're interested, send me your CV, a description of your past research, the area(s) in which you'd like to work, and why you think this is the place to do it.
  • Q: I am interested in a full-time staff or research position. Are there any openings at ISI?

A: USC posts all its full time positions on the web page jobs.usc.edu. Select the Information Sciences Institute to see current openings across ISI. If you're specifically interested in my group, email me and I'll let you know whether we have any openings. Use ÒII Group Job RequestÓ in your subject line so that I won't mistakenly delete your message as spam.
