Carmen's Bright IDEAS serves a context for research in drama-based learning environments, in models of emotion, and models of social interaction. The characters in CBI are autonomous agents, that make decisions about what to say and do based on the story context and the actions of the learner and of other characters. Each character has a model of emotion and coping, which influences their behavior from moment to moment. One character, Gina, acts as director for the story, attempting to guide and influence Carmen in applying the Bright IDEAS problem solving method. Carmen is also influenced by the learner, who can choose thoughts and emotions for Carmen to experience. We plan to continue research in interactive health communications, based upon the techniques developed in Carmen's Bright IDEAS. We continue to develop the methods embodied in CBI in other projects, such as the Mission Rehearsal Exercise project with the USC Institute for Creative Technologies and the Tactical Language Training System project. |
