W. Lewis Johnson  directs the Center for Advanced Research in Technology for Education. His work involves the application of artificial intelligence to education and training.

Catherine M. LaBore  is an anthropologist and media producer. She produces digital media for the CARTE group's researchers, and contributes her knowledge of social theory to relevant research. She received a Masters Degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1990, and a Masters Degree in Visual Anthropology from USC in 1994.

Hannes Vilhjalmsson  is a Research Scientist at CARTE. His research focuses on the social and linguistic role of nonverbal behavior and how such behavior can be modeled in animated characters. In particular he is interested in the kinds of behavior that facilitate interactions between humans and how these behaviors can be generated for agents and avatars in collaborative virtual environments. Hannes received his PhD in Media Arts and Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Nicolaus Mote  is a PhD student in Computer Science specializing in Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics. Nick's research interests include Second Language Acquisition, Chinese-English Machine Translation, and Language Understanding. His CARTE work focuses on modeling and compensating for phonological and syntactic errors inherent in language-learner speech.

Shumin Wu  comes from Hangshou, China. Her top research interests are embodied conversational agents and intelligent user interfaces.
