Channel Utilisation and Queue-Monitor

NS users,

Which is the best way to calculate how many packets are on the transmission
medium?

ie

node2------------------------node3

packet departure at node2 - packet arrival at node3 = packet in transit
would this work (would this include packets dropped?). Is there a
prediefined function which does this?

and queue-monitor....

set qmon0 [$ns monitor-queue $n4 $n2 $output]
the above code monitors the queue from node 4 to node 2, but if the network
is similiar to the below diagram...

node1-----------------------------node4---------------------------node2
                                          |
node3--------------------------------+

Then is parriavls_ the packet arrival count from packets originating from
both node1 and node3 through node4, terminating at node2?
