Taken from
the application:
“The objectives of the study are to develop and study new and ongoing
Wiki-based engineering projects, and compare their adoption to Wiki
projects in non-engineering courses; Create instructional
(pedagogical) assessment tools based on discourse analysis and course
topic ontology for qualitatively evaluating student Wiki use and
identify scaffolding opportunities such as automated recommender
interfaces to promote student engagement and collaboration.”
Researchers will evaluate student adoption and use of the Wiki and
correlate student use to performance on course projects; they will work
with the instructors to iteratively design and evaluate the
instructional assessment interfaces and with the students to evaluate
the scaffolding affordances. The Activity Theory will be used as a
framework for analysis.
This research will ‘piggy-back’ onto students coursework; the coursework
is mandatory; however, the subjects are be given the choice to
participate in the research portion.
Minors are not eligible to participate; subject population consists of
undergraduate USC and UCI students (comparative use data will be
collected from UCI only).
The researcher will be reminded that the study may require IRB Approval
from UCI. If IRB Approval from UCI is required, the approval notice
should be submitted to the UPIRB using the “send message to IRB’
function in iStar.
The researcher will also be reminded to submit an amendment application
and upload any instruments to be utilized for this research study.
The study is funded by NSF.
In order to access student grades, generally, schools must have written
permission from the eligible student. However, FERPA allows schools to
disclose those records, without consent, to school officials with
legitimate educational interest. A FERPA waiver has been uploaded into
section 4 allowing researchers to access student information.
