Herbert Schorr spearheaded ISI’s expansion from a few well-regarded specialties to international renown across a wide range of computing disciplines. Schorr led ISI for 24 years before stepping down as Executive Director in 2012. He continues to hold several senior posts within the highly ranked USC Viterbi School of Engineering, serves as an advisor to the School’s Dean, and directs the newly formed, interdisciplinary Program on Informatics, among other roles.

Schorr joined ISI in 1988 following a distinguished career with International Business Machines Corporation. As Group Director of Advanced Systems and Vice President of Systems for IBM Research, he oversaw development of IBM’s artificial intelligence and image processing capabilities worldwide. Schorr is a member of advisory committees to the Automation Hall of Fame, US Department of Defense, and US President George W. Bush. He earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Princeton University, and has taught at Princeton, Cambridge University and the University of California at Berkeley.
