Intelligent Systems

ISI operates one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) groups.  Expertise includes natural language, information integration, education and “serious games.”  We also explore adaptive robotics, digital government, unexpected events and other leading-edge disciplines.

Research spans AI theory, technical aspects and practical implementation, such as building working prototypes and partnering with industry to create commercial applications.  Current initiatives range from genomics research support to complex geospatial mapping to de-encryption of still-unreadable ancient texts.

AI at ISI involves nearly 100 researchers, research programmers and USC graduate students.  Many researchers hold Ph.D.s in computer science or related disciplines, and some also serve as research faculty in the top-ten USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

Our primary thrusts:

  • Natural language:  statistical machine translation, machine learning, information retrieval and extraction, digital government, discourse and summarization, ontologies, text mining and lexical semantics.  Director:  Jerry Hobbs, Ph.D.

  • Knowledge Technologies:  intelligent user interfaces, knowledge-rich problem solving and other interactive knowledge capture; large-scale distributed data analysis and others.  Director:  Yolanda Gil, Ph.D.

  • Information Integration:  semantic modeling of information sources, data and geospatial data integration, mashup construction, information extraction, social metadata learning, intelligent agents and others.  Director:  Craig Knoblock, Ph.D.
