ISI’s Intelligent Systems Division is a genuinely unique research environment. As part of ISI, we belong to a world-class research entity and unit of the University of Southern California’s renowned Viterbi School of Engineering. USC is a highly regarded research university, while the Viterbi School of Engineering consistently is ranked among the top dozen engineering schools nationwide, hosting 1,900 undergraduate and 3,300 graduate students each year.
Many Viterbi School faculty are National Academy of Engineering members, among other distinctions. More than 40 ISI researchers also serve as Viterbi research faculty, a role in which they teach courses and direct graduate students on dissertations and research projects. In fact, numerous students have earned Ph.D.s while working as research assistants at ISI.
Our division is both disciplined and creative. Researchers balance the practical demands of external funding, such as writing proposals, with cultivating novel ideas and an ongoing spirit of collaboration. Projects often involve other specialties within ISD, across ISI and/or with researchers at USC and other universities, contributing to a vibrant, multidisciplinary climate.
One current, cross-disciplinary effort: bioinformatics and health informatics research within ISI and with colleagues at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Other USC projects have included games and entertainment, social and decision sciences, and cognitive psychology and e-science.
Our AI group holds weekly research seminars given by outside speakers, long-term visiting researchers and ISI professionals. We also host a bi-annual division retreat, annual Graduate Student Symposium, and other activities that nurture our unique, collegial environment.
