Diagnostic Exam for CSCI 558L
Summer 2001

Changes from Spring 2001:

  • Passing grades from Spring 2001 will be accepted, subject to the reapplication of the selection policy (see below).
  • The exam will be held at USC - GFS106, on the first day of class.

All students planning to take CSCI 558L must take and pass a diagnostic exam which will be administered on the first day of class. All students must take the exam, NO EXCEPTIONS. Space is very limited. Please read carefully the following SELECTION POLICY which will be applied to students who pass the exam.

Passing grades from the previous session (Spring 2001) are accepted as passing grades for this session. Admission is determined by a pasing grade on the diagnostic AND the application of the selection policy for this term..

Diagnostic Exam:

Date: Tuesday TBA
Time: 2:00-3:30pm
Location: at USC, GFS106
Duration: 120 minutes

Purpose:

The purpose of the diagnostic exam is to make sure that those taking the course have good programming skills and the prerequisite understanding of networking and operating systems. The diagnostic exam will not count toward your final grade.

Format:

The exam will consist of short questions, requiring a few words to a few sentences.

What will be covered:

The exam will test the following:
  • Your knowledge of programming (C/C++)
  • Socket programming
  • Networking background (EE450, CS551, EE555)
  • Operating systems background (CS402, CS555)
  • The material for the exam will draw mostly from courses like EE450 and CS402, but also from CS551, CS555 and EE555.  To prepare for the test you should study the exams and homeworks of these cources. If you feel you need to review the material visit the web pages of these classes. Don't forget to brush up  your programming knowledge, there will be some hard questions on C/C++ and socket programming.
