Assembly

The Joy of OOJ Assembly

There are two sequences of steps to orbmaking;

Orbmaster

  • Obtains supplies
  • Cuts ribbons (click on photos to enlarge)

    • undo the tape from the end of the ribbon
    • use the tape to secure the ribbon to the back of a standard pad of 8.5x11 paper
    • wrap the ribbon around the pad vertically
    • cut through the bundle at the top where the looping began
    • the result should be 15 two-foot lengths of ribbon, plus some scraps to be discarded
    • tie the result in a half-knot; it's useful to keep these 15 ribbons together, since they match the contents of one box of orbs

  • "Brands" orbs
    • puts the ISI logo and year on the back; this task was shared by the Orbettes when it was the letters "ISI", but became the orbmaster's role when the original ISI logo was used:

Orbettes

(note that the last two steps are like tying shoe-laces)

  • Tie ribbons (click on photos to enlarge)
    1. fold the ribbon in half
    2. tie a half-knot in the ribbon near the center
    3. slip the orb's hanger loop onto one of the free ends of the ribbon
    4. tie another half-knot to secure the orb (another half-knot can be added if desired)
    5. tie a bow
  • Write names on the orbs (click on photos to enlarge)

    • First and last names, typically in two lines
  • Staple candycanes to the orbs (click on photos to enlarge)
    (last step before distribution)

    • Try to put staple around ribbon, rather than through it; Careful not to crush the candycane
(though crushed ones are just as tasty, we try not to distribute crushed canes)
    • Slide the cane down towards the top of the orb
  • Distribute the orbs

    • Pin or tape just outside the owner's door
    • Place near the nameplate, or near existing orbs if already there.
