Careers

ISI offers many of the best features of two worlds: major research universities and corporate research-and-development labs. The result is an unusually flexible working environment in which information scientists can focus on the subjects that intrigue them most -- in roles designed to reflect individual career goals -- with internationally renowned colleagues from numerous, cutting-edge technology disciplines.

Academic advantages

As a unit of USC’s highly ranked Viterbi School of Engineering, ISI provides the independence of an academic setting, along with a lengthy history of success in drawing research support. Individuals are encouraged to seek funding for their unique research priorities, and to pursue their interests as fully as those resources allow.

Researchers who enjoy working with students may engage them, usually at the masters’ degree and Ph.D. levels, as research assistants. ISI professionals also may be considered for Research Faculty appointments, teaching in fields such as computer science, electrical engineering, industrial and system engineering, astronautics and space technology, and materials science. Research faculty also may be able to guide students on Ph.D. dissertations that complement researchers’ own interests.

Corporate appeal

Conversely, ISI resembles corporate labs in its emphasis on projects and systems, along with a leadership commitment to collaborative and team-oriented efforts. Researchers often work closely with ISI colleagues in different disciplines, in departments on USC’s main campus, or at other institutions. Our professionals also can move beyond pure research to develop working prototypes – sometimes on a substantial scale – with colleagues at diverse institutions, corporate sponsors and other real-world users.

ISI’s also provides administrative support for creating research proposals. Information scientists accordingly are freer to pursue – and realize – ambitious research agendas.

Dual benefits, dual locations

In both academic and corporate circles, ISI offers the prestige and intellectual stimulation of a world-class institution. We hire talented researchers, engineers, and research programmers and managers in our Marina del Rey, California, and Arlington, Virginia locales. Please consult the USC employment site for current openings.

In addition, we periodically launch new research projects or directions. If you don’t see the right opening, but consider your skills and knowledge ideal for ISI, please submit a resume and letter describing your primary interests and/or research areas to ISI human resources. For temporary affiliation, we suggest our Visiting Scholars program.
