From the old site:

The X-Bone is a system for the dynamic depoloyment and management of overlay networks. It consists of the following components:

  • Resource Daemon - running on an overlay host, a host-based overlay router, or as a dynamic DNS for the overlay
  • Overlay Manager
  • Web GUI

To install the X-Bone, use the following: (see also the FAQ)

The X-Bone software is also available on-line, including directories of the ports and patches. Click here.

The X-Bone is available on the following operating systems (see footnotes in ()):

  • (1) - FreeBSD/CAIRN requires manual installation of dependent components. The 2.2.x ports are no longer supported by FreeBSD; manual installation is required for those components. Additionally, CAIRN redefines the OS release name outside the conventional strings used by FreeBSD (uname -r), some components (e.g., OpenSSL) require overrides to install.
  • (2) - FreeBSD 3.x requires ip-tun to support IPIP encapsulation. ip-tun is a user-level implementation of IPIP tunnels developed by the X-Bone group, and is installed as a dependency.
Update: ip-tun is no longer supported. Please upgrade your FreeBSD and X-Bone to more recent versions or apply KAME patches.
  • (3) - PAO patches may also be included; the X-Bone has been tested with these patches installed as well.
  • (4) - FreeBSD 4.0 is not supported by v1.2; a new release is expected soon. The primary issues are 1) proper detection of the OS type, (fixed in v1.3) 2) updating the X-Bone's configuration of dependent components, where these components have changed in 4.0, (fixed in v1.3) and 3) a persisting bug in the IPSEC's 'setkey' command (requiring a patch from KAME, which is not yet available).
  • (5) - Linux RedHat 6.0/6.1 require a kernel patch to support multiple IPIP tunnel headers. This patch, developed by the X-Bone group, is available here. This directory also includes convenient rpms of Apache+SSL and Perl Net::SSLeay
  • (6) The X-Bone 1.2 release is being tested under 4.0, and an update (v1.3) is expected by the end of June 2000.
  • (7) This was tested and confirmed on 3/17/00, just after the 1.2 release. The 1.2 release works as-is.

The system supports IPsec as indicated on the following operating systems:

FreeBSD
CAIRN 2.5
FreeBSD 3.x FreeBSD 3.x
+ KAME IPsec
FreeBSD 4.x Linux
RedHat 6.0
Linux
RedHat 6.0
+ NIST IPsec
Linux
RedHat 6.1
supports IPSEC YES
(except 3DES) (8)
NO YES NO (9) NO YES NO
  • (8) FreeBSD/CAIRN IPsec 3DES does not currently interoperate with FreeBSD/KAME or Linux/NIST IPSEC.
  • (9) There is a bug in the 4.0 RELEASE version of 'setkey' which prevents individual keys from being deleted. This should work correctly when the next IPSEC bugfix is released; it affects ONLY IPSEC'd overlays.
