UN/EDIFACT:
United Nations rules for Electronic Data Interchange For
Administration, Commerce and Transport. They comprise a set of
internationally agreed standards, directories and guidelines
for the electronic interchange of structured data, and in
particular that related to trade in goods and services between
independent, computerized information systems.
ASC X12:
ASC X12 develops, maintains, interprets, publishes and
promotes the proper use of American National and UN/EDIFACT
International Electronic Data Interchange Standards. The ASC
X12 body comes together three times each year to develop and
maintain EDI standards. Its main objective is to develop
standards to facilitate electronic interchange relating to
such business transactions as order placement and processing,
shipping and receiving information, invoicing, and payment and cash
application data, and data to and from entities involved in
finance, insurance, education, and state and federal
governments.
The International Standard
for the Exchange of Product Dat(STEP, ISO 10303): STEP is
an ISO industrial standard for communicating design &
manufacturing information over an entire product
life-cycle. Many CAD and PDM systems now support STEP - CATIA,
Unigraphics, PRO/Engineer, AUTOCAD, Microstation,
Trispectives, ACIS, and more.
The Unified Medical Language System(UMLS):
The purpose of the UMLS is to aid the development of systems
that help health professionals and researchers retrieve and
integrate electronic biomedical information from a variety of
sources. The UMLS project develops machine-readable "Knowledge
Sources" that can be used by a wide variety of applications
programs to overcome retrieval problems caused by differences
in terminology and by the scattering of relevant information
across many databases.
Basic Semantic Repository (BSR): The BSR is a technical
infrastructure which provides storage, mnintenance and
distribution facilities for reference data about semantic units and
their links with operational directories.
The BSR Project: The BSR project, a joint ISO/UN-ECE
initiative, commenced several years ago. It is managed by the
BSR Management Committee with representative from the UN-ECE,
ISO and other aligned organisations.
BEACON: A fresh approach to Open Standards Infrastructure
for Business and Industrial Applications
BEACON is based on Object Technology and thus represents
the "state of the art" thinking in Open processes. It is
therefore well placed to provide the basis for the
standards infrastructures that will be required for the
emerging "new-age" technologies.
Ontologies
Base-ontologies
Cyc(Common-sense Knowledge Base):
Cyc is a bold attempt to assemble a massive knowledge base (on
the order of axioms) spanning human consensus knowledge. We
examine the need for such an undertaking, and review our
efforts over the past five years to begin its construction.
ARPA/Rome Laboratory Planning Ontology:
The Planning Ontology project aims to develop a sharable and
modularly-structured ontology for describing plans,
plan-related information, and the activity of planning.
The Knowledge Sharing Effort
The Knowledge-Sharing Effort, sponsored by the Advanced
Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific
Research (AFOSR), the Cooperation for National Research
Initiative (NRI), and the National Science Foundations (NSF),
is an initiative to develop the technical infrastructure and
conventions to support the sharing of knowledge among systems.
Penman/Pangloss Ontology Base
The creation and use of large (50,000 or more) concept
taxonomies and Ontologies for natural language processing and
other applications by combining online resources such as
dictionaries and thesauri, statistical methods over text, and
traditional human knowledge acquisition interfaces.
Representation Languages
Loom:
Loom is a research project in the Artificial Intelligence
research group at the University of Southern California's Information
Sciences Institute. The goal of the project is to devleop and
field advanced tools for knowledge representation and reasoning in
Artificial Intelligence.
Knowledge Interchange Format (KIF):
Knowledge Interchange Format (KIF) is a computer-oriented
language for the interchange of knowledge among disparate
programs. It has declarative semantics (i.e. the meaning of
expressions in the representation can be understood without
appeal to an interpreter for manipulating those expressions);
it is logically comprehensive (i.e. it provides for the
expression of arbitrary sentences in the first-order predicate
calculus); it provides for the representation of knowledge
about knowledge.

The CommerceNet Consortium:
The premier industry consortium for companies using, promoting and
building electronic commerce solutions on the Internet.
The Electronic Commerce Guide:
This resource features a comprehensive list of links to hundreds of sites and
resources on the World Wide Web devoted to the evolving electronic
commerce industry.
The International Center for
ElectronicCommerce(ICEC):
These are two functions of the ICEC: one is the function for the
research and development which will be performed by domestic
researchers and international research fellows, another is the
function for the international activities which will be realized
through several research events such as an international conference and
workshops and th publication of research papers.
The National Electronic
Commerce Resource Center(ECRC): The mission of the ECRC Program is to
promote awareness and implementation of Electronic Commerce and
related technologies into the U.S. integrated civil-military
industrial base. This will help manufacturers improve their
competitive posture in global markets and strengthen the
U.S. integrated civil-military industrial base.
