I am a computer scientist in the Center for Health Informatics (CHI) at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute (USC/ISI). I also act as the lead architect for the center's product development. The goal of this development is to integrate key CS research results with existing open-source software and operational practices to produce secure, reliable, and effective informatics systems for pilot use in real clinical medicine and clinical trials.
My research interests are in distributed and scalable systems problems, including resource management, data management, and policy federation as seen in non-trivial "grid" systems. At present, I am focusing on the the health-care and bio-sciences problem areas, with their significant regulatory and privacy concerns.
I previously worked with many of the same people at USC/ISI as now, as a founding member of the Globus project, from early 1997 until 2004. I was lured back to USC/ISI in late 2008, with the opportunity to work in the newly formed Center for Health Informatics.
