Comment: These large and old columns show how big the abbey must have been. They really dwarf the people in the picture.
hh_entrance_scot_coatOfArms * Here is the entrance to the palace from the front courtyard, with the royal coat of arms of Scotland above it. * 480 x 640 * (114KB)

hh_entrace_scotCoatArms2 * This is a closer shot of the coat of arms of Scotland. * 640 x 480 * (127KB)

hh_innercourtyard_surroundedchambers * This is the innter courtyard of the palace. The architecture borrows this idea from the Greeks such that the columns increase in intricacy from the bottom floors to the top, although I forgot why. As you tour the palace, you follow the trail that visitors to the royals would have. In this trail, each room becomes more and more magnificent, culminating in the King's room. This was done to intimidate and impress visitors with the king (or queens) wealth and power. The most interesting part, in my opinion, were the rooms of Mary Queen of Scots. Again, there were no pics allowed inside, so you will just have to take my word :) * 640 x 480 * (124KB)

hh_abbey1 * Connected to the palace is this abbey, which is really old and cool. This is a picture of one of the walls. * 480 x 640 * (120KB)

hh_abbey2 * This is the other wall of the abbey. These ruins are really cool looking. * 480 x 640 * (114KB)

hh_abbey4 * This is the outside of the abbey. I thought the crumbly stones were super cool looking. * 480 x 640 * (124KB)

old_tomb_in_hhAbbey * This is one of the most easily legible tombs in the abbey, so I took a photo of it. * 480 x 640 * (124KB)

ruins_in_hh_garden_outsidepalace * These are some sort of ruins right outside of the abbey. Nothing was said about them in the audio tour, but they looked significant. * 640 x 480 * (133KB)

hh_garden_grounds * This is part of the garden outside of the palace, which is huge. This is connected to Hollyrood Park, which used to be royal hunting grounds. There are lots of signs saying to stay off of the perfectly manicured grass, but apparently this joker is above the law. To bad for him, his crime is now documented for all history on the internet! * 640 x 480 * (123KB)

hh_abbey4_connection_toHHseen * Another shot of the outside of the abbey. The buttresses were really neat looking. Also, this shows how the Abbey connected to the palace. * 640 x 480 * (131KB)
