Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

Welcome to the third season of Masters in the Chapel!

Sixty years ago, our founding members built First Lutheran with their own hands. They were inspired to create a place of lasting beauty that would fill the souls of all who enter with peace and comfort.

When a fire destroyed the sanctuary on September 11, 1998, the congregation rallied to rebuild. The renovation was finally completed last spring with the installation of a state-of-the-art pipe organ designed and voiced by Manuel Rosales - the same man chosen by Disney Hall.

It is an absolutely magnificent instrument and our gift to future generations.

In honor of our 60th Anniversary and the public debut of the new organ, we invite you to our Season of Celebration. Some of the best musicians in Los Angeles are coming to help us celebrate, and we are convinced that this will be our best season ever.

So come and head the masters perform an hour of glorious music in the serenity and acoustic splendor of our chapel. We look forward to seeing you!

Ken Frese, Pastor

Christoph Bull Sunday, November 7 at 4:00 pm
Lights! Cameras! Action! Christoph Bull pulls out all the stops on the king of instruments to open the season in celebration of First Lutheran's 60th Anniversary. This outrageous organist plays everything from Bach to the Beatles, accompanied by a projected visual extravaganza by Steve Nalepa. If you think you know what organ music sounds like, think again! This is a concert for young and old and everyone in between. When he's not touring the U.S and Europe, opening concerts for Cindy Lauper or playing on a Stephen Spielberg soundtrack, Dr. Bull serves as university organist and professor at UCLA, and runs in the L.A. Marathon.

Colburn Children's Choir Sunday, December 12 at 4:00 pm
Ring in the holiday spirit with the angelic voices of The Colburn Children's Choir. This very specialized ensemble of young musicians from the Colburn School of Performing Arts will perform Bach's Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring along with a joyous selection of holiday favorites from around the world. This highly acclaimed choir is led by Mark Williams, a well-known composer of choral music and children's operas.

Pacific Harmony String Quartet Saturday, February 5 at 7:00 pm
This is a rare opportunity to hear a world-class quartet in the most intimate setting possible outside of your living room. Back by popular demand, the award winning foursome includes Los Angeles Philharmonic violinists Suli Xue and Jonathan Wei and violist Hui Liu, with cellist Pinfei Tang. The program will include Mozart's Adagio and Fugue in C Minor, Dvorak's Quartet in F Major "American" and selections from their CD, Melodies of the Far East.

Note! Engagements at Disney Hall won't allow them to play for us on our traditional Sunday afternoons, so this is a Saturday evening concert.

Scott Hiltzik and House of Games Sunday, April 10 at 4:00
Our season finale is the beginning of a new tradition to celebrate the incredible talent we have right here in our own back yard. We're delighted to present Scott Hiltzik, a composer, pianist and educator, who made his debut in Carnegie Hall this summer when "The Music of Scott Hiltzik" opened k.d. lang's concert tour. He'll be performing original compositions with his contemporary jazz band, House of Games. The quartet features Brad Rabuchin on guitar, Trey Henry on bass, and Dave Tull on drums. Individual credits include work with Ray Charles, Chuck Mangione, Aretha Franklin, and Dizzie Gillespie.
