CS558L: Laboratory Rules

  • The routers are all running IOS images from flash memory. Don't ever use the commands write memory or any command that affects the flash memory, such as erase flash. They may easily corrupt the IOS image.
  • The routers take a while to boot. Please be patient.
  • The machines for the lab exercises are put on the tables. You should only use these machines. In other words, you are not allowed to switch any of these machines without the permission from the instructor or the TA.
  • You are not allowed to open the cover of any machines.
  • You are not allowed to change any BIOS configurations.
  • You are not allowed to set user-specific passwords on any machines.
  • After you are done with your work, please roll the ethernet cables neatly and put them back in the approriate boxes. Do not remove the console cables or the console connectors. Do not remove the tranceivers.   You do not have to store cables if there is someone waiting to use the rack, but you must dismantle your connections.
  • If you find a broken cable, please lable it and put it aside. Please also send an email to the instructor and the TA.
  • When you switch the console cable between routers, do not disconnect the big DB25 connectors. Those are screwed in the router CPU. Move the RJ45 connector instead.
  • If you bring in food/drink/whatever, TAKE IT WITH YOU when you leave. There is a trash can right outside the lab.
  • Please do not use or change any machines in the lab that are not designated for the exercises or projects.
  • Finally, send TA email immediately when you find something broken.
