Hybrid Detection of DOS Attack
Xue Cai, Aleksey Polunchenko, John Heidemann, Alexander Tartakovsky

We have build a hybrid intrusion detection system (IDS) which combines change-point approach and spectral approach to detect denial of service (DOS) attack.

Change-point approach is quick but with relatively high false alarm rate (FAR). Spectral approach uses periodicity in network traffic to detect attacks. It firstly generates power spectral density (PSD) of packet arrival time series and then compares peak frequencies in PSD with expected attack frequecy list. But spectral approach is slow and expensive.

We combined change-point approach and spectral approach together which is called hybride approach. The hybride approach uses change-point approach to do rapid triage and spectral approach to confirm results.

Currently we are evaluating this system at USC.
