Derek Lazzaro, J.D.

Chief Information Officer

As CIO of the USC Information Sciences Institute, Derek is the leader of the Institute’s IT division and chief technical architect of its infrastructure and services. Derek works closely with ISI’s computer scientists to develop services and strategies that enable research, innovation, collaboration – all while promoting effective cyber security.

Previously at USC, Derek served as an assistant chief information officer in the central IT division. In that role, he was responsible for strategic planning and budgeting, vendor management, contract negotiation, and policy development. He also oversaw the Project Management Office, implemented business process improvements, and served on the university's information security risk committee.

He has also worked as an academic manager and counsel for USC, and before that as an attorney in private practice. Before attending law school, he was a co-founder and vice president of Travbuddy.com, a successful online startup in the social media and travel space.

Derek has been an attendee, participant, or speaker at many major tech conferences and events, including NANOG, the Common Solutions Group, EDUCAUSE Connect, Gartner Catalyst, the Gartner West Coast CIO Forum, and more.

He serves as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Palos Verdes Estates, and has degrees from UCLA and USC.
