{"id":152,"date":"2021-10-22T20:16:37","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T20:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isi.edu\/centers-serc\/?page_id=152"},"modified":"2022-04-21T16:01:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T16:01:16","slug":"facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.isi.edu\/centers-serc\/about\/facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h3><strong>Sophisticated, Hands-On Construction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Marina del Rey, SERC uses a variety of equipment to create research testbeds and hardware components for satellite and space activities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A benchtop computer numerical control (CNC) mill and lathe to create nanosatellite scale structures and components.\u00a0 The CNCs, operated by students, can convert Solidworks CAD files through MasterCam into G-files for execution.<\/li>\n<li>A 3D printer large enough to build an entire Cubesat prototype structure from ABS plastic.<\/li>\n<li>Digital electronic bench with component level microscope and soldering irons.<\/li>\n<li>Structural integration benches for mechanical and pressurization hardware development.<\/li>\n<li>High precision flat table that serves as an air bearing testbed and an optics table for\u00a0 \u00a0optics alignment.<\/li>\n<li>15&#8217;x15&#8242; Class 100,000 Clean room with full HEPA filtering and electrical ground benches.<\/li>\n<li>Full 5,000 psi compressor for high pressure filling station.<\/li>\n<li>Digital\/electronic scopes and test equipment suitable for nano-satellite integration and test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isi.edu\/centers-serc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/10\/facilities-5.png\" alt=\"(top) Oscilloscope and Cicuit Board (bottom) Stuent Working with Oscilloscope\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"429\" width=\"286\" title=\"facilities-5\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t<h3>Direct Satellite Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>SERC maintains two ground-tracking antennas and a station for tracking satellite projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 4.5 meter mesh parabolic dish antenna located on top of USC&#8217;s physics building (ACB)) on the main campus in downtown Los Angeles.\u00a0 The antenna has a complete two-axis tracking system and a separate, climate-controlled facility that houses the operations PC equipped with satellite tracking and receiver control software, and a full RF suite of components.\u00a0 The dish is good from 1-6Ghz and has the performance to track both LEO and GEO satellites to sub-degree accuracy.<\/li>\n<li>A 3 meter solid parabolic dish located on a moveable trailer, enabling USC teams to move the dish to ground locations that support sky coverage and inclinations.\u00a0 Equipped with customer feed horn assembly for various frequencies, the dish has a two-axis AlfaSPID rotor and is controlled via an onboard laptop.\u00a0 Power is supplied externally or via an onboard generator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isi.edu\/centers-serc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/10\/facilities-6.png\" alt=\"Students in front of Huge Plate Antenna\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"373\" width=\"286\" title=\"facilities-6\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sophisticated, Hands-On Construction In Marina del Rey, SERC uses a variety of equipment to create research testbeds and hardware components for satellite and space activities.
