About MS-HLT

The mission of the HLT master’s program is to prepare students for a career in industry related to machine learning, natural language, and speech processing; or going on to Ph.D. studies in the related area. We anticipate you to have a strong background in undergraduate-level programming and in math (calculus and linear algebra).

The program offer courses to teach you implementing machine learning algorithms from scratch (based on open-source packages) using popular programming languages such as Python and Java, and applying them to NLP and speech processing applications such as text analytics, speech recognition, and dialog systems. You will learn to programme on high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) and in the cloud environment. You will also work on research projects under the direct supervision of distinguished academic researchers and faculty, where they help you to develop basic research skills you need to succeed in the industry.

The University of Southern California (USC) and the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) have a long history of foster world-class engineers and researchers in Human Language Technology. Our Ph.D. students have gone on to become professors in top universities such as the University of Maryland, and Johns Hopkins University, or to work at leading technology companies such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon, or to start their own startups. The HLT Master’s program aims to prepare students to work with HLT with a 4-semester cycle, to satisfy the intense demand from the industry for expertise in HLT.
