Cyber Seminar Talk
Professor Cees de Laat, University of Amsterdam
Video Recording:

Abstract:  The landscape of cyberinfrastructure for research, industrial and societal applications is rapidly changing. We observe the emergence of use cases where organisations that normally compete, have to put data together for a common goal. Examples here are preventive maintenance, logistic processes or health applications. There is a move towards virtualized and programmable infrastructure. The cloud paradigm enables applications to use computing resources at different places and optimize workflows in either bringing computing to the data or the other way around. Programmable networks allow communication patterns in unprecedented ways to create application specific Internets. We study how modern technologies can assist in keeping data safe and if agreements and policies on data use can be programmed in the current versatile infrastructure. This talk presents the latest developments in the Research CyberInfrastructure to support Big Data sciences.

Speaker:  Prof. Cees de Laat chairs the System and Network Engineering (SNE) laboratory at the Faculty of Science at University of Amsterdam. The SNE lab conducts research on leading-edge computer systems of all scales, ranging from global-scale systems and networks to embedded devices. Across these multiple scales our particular interest is on extra-functional properties of systems, such as performance, programmability, productivity, security, trust, sustainability and, last but not least, the societal impact of emerging systems-related technologies. For current activities and projects see:
