Concerning network topology generators: There are a couple of listed on 
http://netweb.usc.edu/daniel/research/sims/topology. I used Tiers for creating 
my network topologies. It does a pretty good job. You can configure parameters 
such as number of nodes in the backbone network, number of nodes in the 
leaves, network connectivity etc. It also associates parameters with each link 
such as bandwidth, delay, etc. I attached the output of an example topology as 
gzipped postscript. Hope you find it useful.
