Connecting an application to ns

Hi,

I should connect an application to ns by providing a gateway to ns using
UDP and TCP connections and transmit "real world" data accross the
simulated network. 

Has anyone made any experiences with a similar presentation of a
problem? Any hints would be appreciated gratefully.

I am new to ns. Completed reading the documentation dated April 1st I am
not really sure where to start investigation for finding the solution to
this given problem. Reading chapter 27 starting on page 199 gave me the
idea of installing such a gateway on raw IP level using the IP Network
Objects (27.4.2). On the other hand chapter 25 pointed me to the
application proxy server.
