Find this paragraph in the makefile :

$(GEN_DIR)version.c: VERSION
	-mkdir $(GEN_DIR:\\=)
	$(RM) $@
	$(TCLSH) bin/string2c.tcl version_string < VERSION > $@

Try commenting the line : $(RM) $@

I think this line evaluates to the Dos command erase gen\\version.c
The problem is that the file is not found so this causes an error message. But
why does it stop nmake ? I don't know.
