it is an object i think.

See bi-connector.h: 
NsObject* uptarget_
NsObject* downtarget_
and connector.h:
NsObject* target_

For example a Mac's uptarget_ is the LL layer, and the Mac's downtarget_ is the 
Phy interface with the Channel.
