awk and compute delay

Dear Sir:
I am a newer learning ns-2.1b5.I want to compute end-to-end packet delay.After searching this achive,I have found someone proposing awk scripts to do this work.Does this mean that I would learn another language for this work?
Or, I can just use it in tcl enviorment?
tracefile-->tcl(awk scripts)-->end-to-end delay result file
