Based on the suffix (tar.gz) that tar archive has been gzipped.  Try "tar xvzf
ad-hockey.tar.gz" (notice the z) if you have a recent verrsion of gnutar or you
can try "gunzip -c ad-hockey.tar.gz | tar xvf -"
