Hardware Requirements: You need an Windows NT machine with at least 100Mb of hard drive space to install the software. You will probably need another 100Mb of disk space for the cache directory used to keep local copies of documents and map information commonly used in your information spaces. Therefore, we advise having around 250Mb of hard drive available to install and run GeoWorlds. Most of the software was developed on 266MHz Dell machines, with 128Mb of RAM. The system performed poorly on machines with 32Mb of RAM, and okay on machines with 64Mb of RAM. Even though we strongly recommend using a 128Mb machine, the minimum requirement is 64Mb of RAM. Software Requirements: GeoWorlds use ESRI ArcView software package as its GIS Map viewer. This software is required if you want to take advantage of the mapping capabilities and the map-to-document, document-to-map conversion features that GeoWorls provides. However, GeoWorlds' document management components can still be used without ArcView. These include the advanced search capabilities, as well as clustering, analysis and categorization of documents retrieved from the web. Getting the Software:
The software can be downloaded from the Web after obtaining a user ID and a password. Please refer to the on-line download page for more details.
GeoWorlds is also available on CD. You can obtain your CD copy by emailing to [email protected], subject "GeoWorlds CD request". Please, don't forget to include your name, affiliation and mailing address in the body of the message. You will receive you copy (for non-commercial purposes ONLY) by mail within 7 to 10 days of the receipt of your message. Installing the Software: The installation itself is straightforward. Just insert the CD on your CD-ROM and the installation software will kick in and start the installation procedure. Follow the instructions on your screen and in a few minutes you will be ready to use GeoWorlds. Once the software is installed, click on "Start", then on "Programs", then select the "GeoWorlds version 2.x" folder, and finally, select the "GeoWorlds Client" shortcut. Wait a few seconds and the three main system components will popup on your screen. These components are: the GeoWorlds Client, the document manager (Dasher) and the map manager (ArcView). |
