How to uncompress?

Hi everyone,
    I am a newbie in Ns2.I build Ns2 by the way of  "all 
at one".I download the source "ns-allinone-2.1b5a.tar.gz".
Then I uncompress it in Linux using "gunzip 
ns-allinone-2.1b5a.tar.gz",but error "invalid compressed 
data-format violated" occur.Will you tell me how to 
uncompress the file?
