Some of the people in this list asked me about some performance results
from the experiments I ran of TCP on ATM networks over satellite (NASA's
ACTS).

TCP on OC-3c ATM over ACTs
---------------------------
Sun ULTRAsparc 1 -------> Sun ULTRAsparc 1
(University of Kansas) (Goddard Space Flight Center)
Solaris 2.6 beta Solaris 2.5.1 (pathes for large buffer sizes)
10 MB TCP window size 10 MB TCP window size

Results: (10 trial in ascending order here)
--------
RTT = 534 ms

Throughput:(Mbps)
-----------
100.973, 105.270, 105.986, 106.124, 106.550, 111.600, 112.923, 114.068,
114.679, 119.000

As you can see the results are pretty good and close to terrestrial TCP
over ATM over LANs or WANs.
The BER on the satellite links during the experiments was on the range of
10^(-11) in KU site and 10^(-13) in the GSFC site.
