Two Concerns - are errors important?

I think what I was trying to say, was that there is not just one
type of satellite link, one satellite link power budget, one
system design. Someone, somewhere, makes link quality design decisions.

For as long as I have been putting IP over satellite, there have
been three types of system:

(1) High availability, often high bit rate (could be > 4 Mbps
or could also be much less e.g. IP/Digital TV, DirecPc, etc etc)

(2) Variable quality systems - particularly transportable or
ad-hoc set-ups (the military is an extreme example of this, but
any lower bit rate system places more demands on modem/link design
and satellite bandwidth/power often is an issue)

(3) Mobile systems - where link availability may vary considerably
depending on location.

For some types of system link errors ARE significant. For other
situations speed mismatch (i.e. congestion) is a key issue and
will dominate over link loss. I'm interested in both types of loss
and believe that solutions can be found for TCP/IP in BOTH cases.
