[ns] How do I simulate what happens at MAC level

I am trying to simulate what happens at MAC level in various MAC protocols
in order to design my own for the optical wireless medium and would like to
know how to simulate the characteristics of a MAC protocol. I have set up a
wireless cum wired scenario but am unable to work out how to get at the
simulation data and what it means.

Also, does anyone know how to change the characteristics of the 802.11 MAC.
I know how to change the frequency of the physical layer, but how do I
change the bandwidth and delay and things like that

How do I analyse the data afterwards to get the throughput as the trace
files are very complicated and I am new to linux as well.
