grid network simulation

Hi,

Patience..., this is a newbie question..
I want to simulate a varying grid topology to study the relationship
between buffer sizes at nodes and the size of the network (assuming
homogenuity amongst the nodes,links & agents in the network). Also I'd
want to find the optimum buffer size given grid NxN such that there is 0
buffer overflow.
Could you guys advice me of a good starting point to look at ?
