Yes, there's only one trace format available, and (as others
suggested) you can filter or compress it on the fly.  But the best way
to get a smaller trace is to not do trace-all (if you can).  Often
times all that's relevant is a particular link or links (say, a
pre-determined bottleneck link)---just trace those links, not all the
links.  This can make a HUGE savings in trace size, since packets are
traced once rather than once per hop.
