                        WORKSHOP PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT

                Internets in Emerging Mixed Environments

                - a workshop to be held August 5 and 6th -

The means used for connecting users (or their avatars) to the Internet
backbone are evolving at a rapid pace. Emerging technologies include
high-speed fiber, tetherless (satellite, mobile and portable) and
cable-modem based communications. These increasingly-diverse networking
technologies are being interconnected to support a wider range of user
communities whose environments and operational requirements are far more
stressed than have been previously associated with the Internet community.
The challenge facing us is in efficiently interconnecting these diverse
technologies in a wide variety of environments while fully exploiting
their inherent capabilities.

The JPL Protocol Standards R&D Program would like to host a workshop on
the means, methods and potential barriers to providing efficient and
effective reliable data transport services within increasingly
heterogeneous networking environments.

The workshop will be conducted in an interactive and informal manner - the
first day will consist of invited presentations and short position papers
(each followed by brief discussion periods) from representatives of
various communities of interest (technological, environmental and user)
to provide a community-wide overview of the issues, challenges and potential
solutions regarding the use internet technologies in increasingly diverse
environments. The second day will be sleeves-rolled-up working session to
discuss and identify how and where common problems may be solved in the
future.

The goal of this workshop is to serve as a catalyst; bringing together
representatives from the diverse communities of interest in order to begin
the process of identifying the common subset of environmental/protocol
specific issues and to formulate a strategy to address these problem areas
in a unified fashion. The emphasis will be the on building cross-community
teams to address common problems/needs.

Government (NASA, and DOD), academic and commercial research related to
operations in emerging, heterogeneous environments will be discussed, as
will opportunities for technology transfer, collaborative research and
development and future experiments in extending the Internet will be
discussed by the participants.

The workshop will have a $50 registration fee to cover the cost of the
meeting facilities and refreshments.

If you are interested in attending a workshop like this, please respond by
Friday June 26th! If there is sufficient interest, a formal announcement,
solicitation of position papers and web-page agenda and registration
information will be posted.

Please cut and paste the following "questionnaire" and email to

with the subject line including the word "Workshop" - and please ensure
your return e-mail address is included.

        2. Would you like to present a short position paper?

        3. Would you need hotel accommodations in the Pasadena area?

        4. Would you need laptop power?

        5. Would you be interested in a tour of JPL on Friday AM, August
7th?

        6. Citizenship (US or ??)

        7. Your phone number if you'd like a call to discuss specifics.
