Important!
A member of the group -- who shall remain unidentified (most of
us will be able to relate anyway) -- has, based on previous suffering,
requested that the following be made clear:
Basic Rules of Promiscuous Computing (a.k.a. Using Other People's Machines)
- Everybody has or should have his or her "own" machine which he or she
should use primarily.
- Run memory-eaters like netscape on your OWN
machine ONLY, unless you are one of the few poor souls that got stuck with one
of those old machines that can hardly keep XWindows running. Negotiate asylum
with the owner of a bigger machine in that case.
- Be considerate in your use of resources. For example, don't leave
15 copies of top running all the time.
- Unless your process is neglegible, ASK the affected machine's
owner before you run any big (in terms of cpu and/or memory use)
process on someone else's machine and monitor the process to make
sure it does not run out of control.
- Try to stay within the boundaries of your project, that is, try to limit
your use of machines to machines that belong to your project unless there
is a really good reason why you temporarily need lots of resources (such as participating
in an official evaluation).
- THIS LIST IS NOT A DIRECTORY OF FREEBIES.
It is intended to help you
determine which neighbor to ask before you park your car in his
or her driveway, figuratively speaking.
- UNATTENDED CARS WILL BE TOWED IMMEDIATELY AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE!
If you run your stuff on someone else's machine and it get's it his or
her way, he or she is strongly encouraged to shoot your process down
(and if it's just to teach you manners). The best way to prevent that
is to coordinate your use of that machine with the owner beforehand.
