About

ISI’s Intelligent Systems Division (ISD), one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence research labs, explores diverse topics across the research-and-development continuum. Expertise includes:

Biomedical Data Integration provides a semantically-consistent view of and efficient query access to distributed, heterogeneous biomedical data.

Biomedical Knowledge Engineering, novel innovative methods of building biomedical informatics systems based on cutting-edge AI techniques.

Information Integration, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to solve complex information integration problems

Knowledge Technologies involving workflow creation and management for big science and other applications

Machine Translation such as statistical machine translation and other decipherment problems

Natural Language Processing, in which ISD is internationally renowned, including question answering, summarization and related research

Pedagogical Technologies, including new approaches to effective, differentiated instruction

Robotics, such as modular, self-reconfiguring robots and control methods

Social Networks that decipher ‘social web’ structure and dynamics

With more than 120 researchers, Ph.D. students and visitors, ISD attracts over $12 million in federal grant funding annually. About 15 ISD researchers also hold Research Faculty appointments in the USC Computer Science Department, Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Neuroscience studies.

About ISI

The Information Sciences Institute (ISI) is a world leader in research and development of advanced information processing, computer and communications technologies. A unit of the University of Southern California’s highly ranked Viterbi School of Engineering, ISI is one of the nation’s largest, most successful university-affiliated computer research institutes.

Along with intelligent systems, its largest and most diverse research area, ISI researchers explore a wide range of informatics, computational systems and advanced electronics. Initiatives currently include Internet communications, privacy and security; advanced networking; grid and cloud computing; biomimetics, supercomputing, novel electronics and many other areas.

ISI employs about 350 engineers, research scientists, graduate students and staff. Half of the research staff holds Ph.D.'s. ISD is located at ISI’s headquarters in Marina del Rey, California.
