Description:

Even though Virtual Reality (VR) and Multi User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) have been used in engineering and entertainment fields for years now, they are a recent phenomenon in the area of teacher education. As the diversity and complexity of student populations worldwide increases, so does the demand for training teachers who can meet the learning needs of their students. Research shows that currently a high percentage of novice teachers report lack of preparation to respond to the challenges of their new teaching jobs. Therefore, a crucial need for innovative ways to prepare pre and in-service teachers has to be addressed as swiftly as possible. One of the routes to achieve this goal is by using technology and VR in teacher preparation courses. In this talk some of the mixed-reality environments presently being used in teaching and learning will be discussed in hopes that new doors will open for our conversations to merge engineering and education in more creative as well as practical ways.
