A sudden democratization in media space allows everybody to broadcast their ideas to the millions of followers internationally, allowing the extreme opinions to become visible and once fringe groups to start gaining the unprecedented attention. In such a hyperconnected environment, it is important to develop methods to estimate the rate of information spread, analyze human communication patterns, track polarization at large scales and understand the formation of ideological echochambers. The availability of social data at scale, spontaneously generated and systematically accessible, allows us to identify and measure such complex dynamics.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Goran Muric is a postdoctoral researcher at the USC Information Sciences Institute. His research interests fall at the intersection of Social Computing, Machine Learning, Agent-based Simulations, and Network Theory. Muric studies complex machine-to-machine, machine-to-human and human-to-human interactions and addresses societal problems leveraging the online and offline data.
