Disclosure Control for Network Measurements
Event Details
Talk Abstract:
How do we ensure that sharing network measurements does not disclose information that should not be disclosed? Today’s approaches to this problem rely on best effort and, ultimately, trusting that network data is not misused. This talk explores a different technical approach that involves sound, machine-checked guarantees around non-disclosure. The talk introduces an eBPF-based approach to encode disclosure policies and presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a general—yet disclosure-controlled—approach to carry out flexible measurements over packet streams. The talk also reports on an early deployment experience of this approach that builds on the Patchwork project (https://packetfilters.cs.iit.edu/patchwork/).
Speaker Bio
Nik Sultana (http://www.cs.iit.edu/~nsultana1/) is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Illinois Institute of Technology. He researches techniques to improve the transparency, performance and security of networks — particularly in the service of scientific research infrastructure. Before joining Illinois Tech, he was a post-doc at UPenn after completing his PhD at Cambridge University. In 2025, his group received the Community Contribution Award at IMC. In 2022 he received a Google Research Award, and in 2023-2025 he received VSP awards from the Universities Research Association.ISI Host: David Balenson, Interim Director, Networking and Cybersecurity Division
